WEEK 9: DIGITAL SURREALISM

Surrealism is an art movement that delves into dreams and the subconscious, aiming to challenge traditional perceptions of reality through bizarre combinations and illogical imagery. Unlike realism, which portrays ordinary life and everyday themes, surrealism distorts reality, creating a dream-like atmosphere that invites viewers to explore the irrational aspects of the human mind.

Key characteristics of surrealist art include strange images and unexpected juxtapositions that defy logical reasoning. The movement was profoundly influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories on the unconscious and the rebellious spirit of Dadaism, which questioned conventional artistic norms.

Salvador Dalí stands out as one of the most famous surrealist artists, known for his subliminal imagery and striking, dream-inspired works that encapsulate the essence of surrealism.

In the digital age, surrealism has evolved into digital surrealism, where artists leverage technology to create innovative and contemporary forms of art that continue to explore the themes of the original movement, merging imagination with digital techniques.

Week 9:Illustrated Typography Poster

These image materials were all taken during my travels in China.

This features a photoshoot centered on Yanji culture, showcasing traditional Yanji clothing, which is a precious form of intangible cultural heritage.

The building in this photo was taken in the Wangcheng area of Guilin, representing the local tangible cultural heritage.

Sketches

Progress

Using double exposure, I integrated my image with the surrounding environment. This symbolizes the inseparability of the individual and history. To create an elegant and ancient atmosphere, I added my own photos of classical architecture in the background. I chose warm colors like light gold, light rice, and light blue, and incorporated traditional patterns such as auspicious clouds and mountains.

I selected the quote, "The past is not dead; it is not even past." Written in elegant calligraphy, this philosophical statement aims to provoke viewers to reflect on history. I emphasized the central theme word, HERITAGE, to highlight its significance in the context of the design.

I positioned my portrait in the center of the poster as the visual focus and highlighted the key topic word: "Heritage." The historical quote complements the imagery, and I maintained appropriate white space throughout the layout to create an ethereal atmosphere while preserving the sense of story.

Reflection:

Experience

Creating this poster was a personal journey for me. I chose my self-portrait as the focal point and blended it with classical architecture through double exposure. This design choice symbolized my connection to history and highlighted how our identities are shaped by the past. Working on this project felt like a dialogue between my personal experiences and the broader historical narrative.

Observation

While designing, I realized how much each element contributes to the overall message. The quote "Heritage—The past is not dead; it is not even past" resonated deeply with me. I selected elegant fonts to give it a timeless feel. The warm colors and traditional patterns I chose added depth and a sense of nostalgia. This combination created an atmosphere that encouraged viewers to think about their own relationships with history.

Findings

This process taught me that design is more than just visuals; it’s a way to tell stories and provoke thought. I gained insight into how our identities are intertwined with our heritage, which sparked a desire to keep exploring this theme in my work. Overall, this project not only enhanced my design skills but also deepened my appreciation for history and its impact on who we are.
