Exercises :Task 4  Final Assignment Transitions Webcomic
Assignment OverviewIn this final assignment, students will create an animated, web-ready comic cover and a minimum 3 panel comic page based on the short story "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. This assignment brings together storytelling, composition, and animation to capture the eerie atmosphere of the narrative, formatted for a mobile-friendly, portrait display.https://www.sfu.ca/~swartz/monkeys_paw.htm

1.Excerpts from the clip

The visitor absentmindedly put his empty glass to his lips and then set it down again. His host filled it for him again.

"To look at," said the Sergeant-Major, fumbling in his pocket, "it's just an ordinary little paw, dried to a mummy."

He took something out of his pocket and proffered it. Mrs. White drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously.

2. Design Concept

The cover design uses the pose and expression of the man in the suit to convey an unknown blend of fear and desire. The shadow of the monkey's paw emerging from his coat symbolizes the tension between desire and its consequences, revealing the cost of greed. The background creates a blurred effect that merges reality and fantasy, while the dark color palette and blood-red accents enhance the unsettling atmosphere, sparking curiosity in the viewer.

The comic adopts a five-panel layout that gradually shifts from a relaxed gathering to a tense narrative, creating a striking contrast. The composition highlights the interactions and emotional depth between characters, while the introduction of the monkey's paw emphasizes its mystery and danger. The dark tones create a suffocating atmosphere, and the characters' facial expressions and body language effectively convey fear and curiosity, intensifying the story's tension.

Feedback

Mr. Hafiz reviewed my draft and provided valuable feedback. He noted that the comic has a good sense of continuity and flows smoothly. However, he pointed out several areas that need improvement, such as removing unnecessary panels and adjusting perspectives to better highlight the main subject. His insights will be instrumental in refining my work and enhancing its overall impact.

Reflection

Experience: This assignment was both challenging and rewarding. Creating the cover design and comic deepened my exploration of surrealism and suspense. I enjoyed experimenting with visual storytelling techniques and incorporating dynamic effects, which enhanced the overall appeal of my work. The feedback from Mr. Hafiz was invaluable, allowing me to refine my project based on his constructive criticism.

Observations: I observed the importance of clarity and coherence in visual narratives. The flow between panels is crucial for engaging readers, and I learned that every element must serve the story. Mr. Hafiz's suggestion to remove unnecessary panels highlighted the need for precision in composition, while perspective changes can significantly enhance key elements.

Findings: A key finding from this assignment is the power of visual elements to evoke emotions. Dark color palettes and striking contrasts effectively create tension and curiosity. Integrating symbolic elements, like the monkey's paw, deepens thematic resonance. Additionally, dynamic effects capture the audience's attention and enhance the immersive quality of the story. Overall, this project improved my understanding of design principles in storytelling and prepared me for future creative work.
