INSTRUCTION

PROJECT 1

For this project, we were required to create an instructable poster based on a video we chose from the Pasta Grannies YouTube channel. We were study the video, break down and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instrcutable poster.

Chosen video: Nonna Laura makes a Rustic Potato Pie from Puglia! | Pasta Grannies

Granny Name: Laura

Recipe Name: Pitta Di Patate

Information Breakdown

I first watched the video several times and found the recipe.

Laura's Pitta di Patate Salentina

Visual Reference

I looked on Pinterest for some good references on recipe infographic.

Sketches

Below is the rough sketch I drew. I decided to arrange the cooking steps on the right side of the poster. The ingredient list is placed on the left side of the poster. From top to bottom, in the middle is the visual hierarchy of the Pitta Di Patate.

Digitization

I started to illustrate the assets that were used for the poster in Procreate and Adobe Illustrator.

Then I begin working on the poster. The poster has no big problem with its layout. In terms of color scheme, I originally intended to use the classic purple and yellow contrasting colors to make the overall look more aesthetically pleasing.

During the consultation, Mr. Kannan suggested that I could learn about the story behind this dish and then think about other more suitable color combinations. So I changed the color scheme to a more harmonious combination of pink and green, which is closer to the Italian impression colors.

Final Outcome

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Overall, it's quite good. The color scheme of this poster might be considered in other colors that are more in line with this dish. Also, the guiding lines for each layer of ingredients could be classified in different colors, and the font could be replaced with something more expressive.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I learned how to turn a cooking process into a clear visual instruction poster. The most difficult part of this task was creating all the visual assets. We were not allowed to download vector illustrations from the internet or using Canva or AI generated images, so every ingredient, cooking step, and the final dish had to be illustrated by myself using Adobe Illustrator and Procreate. This process was very time-consuming and required a lot of patience.

However, once all the assets were finished, the rest of the design process became much easier. I could then focus on arranging the layout, organizing the information, and choosing suitable colors for the poster.

Although the illustration stage took a lot of time and effort, completing it made the later work smoother and gave me a sense of achievement. It also helped me better understand how visuals can guide people through step-by-step instructions.
