TASK 2: Character Design Development

For this task, we will refer from our previous task (Task 1) and further develop the character with alternative look/ style, poses and expressions. We are also need to explore different versions of our character's Weapons/ Props/ Equipments.

Poses

I tried to draw plenty poses that fit Kaya, but more of them were expressions full of divinity, agility and friendliness.

After consultation, my lecturer chose the following three as the final pose design, which he thought were the most expressive.

Expression

When exploring the expressions of characters, since the characters in "Sky: Children of the Light" usually wear masks or have no mouths depicted, it is necessary to rely more on the depiction of eyes, eyebrows, body language and emotional symbols to express emotions.

Weapons/Props/Equipments

Kaya's weapon is a bow and arrow transformed from her own spiritual power. When not in use, the bow and arrow are stored in her antlers in the form of spiritual power. Therefore, the design of the bow resembles the shape of Kaya's antlers.

Alternative Outfit

After that, I began to design alternative outfits. I think the theme of astrologer also fits Kaya very well, so I want to try how this idea will work.

I searched for some reference pictures as moodboard and initially designed four sets of astrologer-style clothing. The main elements include celestial bodies, wizard hats, robes, and a sense of mystery.

After consultation, I chose the fourth one as the final design.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:

I know that the characters in Sky don't have mouths. When it comes to facial expressions, you might need to put more effort into your eyes and body language, trying out more different expressions and possibilities. You are currently on the right path. Keep moving forward.

Week 7:

I think these three poses are the most expressive. You still need to cleanup everything, but finalize with those 3 I mentioned.

Week 8:

Since the alternative outfit is not going to be explored for poses and the splash art, we can go with this one. I like how detailed the top of the head part looks like.

REFLECTION

I have to say, this task is one of my favorite part. From exploring the actions and expressions of the characters to alternative outfit designs, I can fully unleash my imagination and creativity. Although this means that I do need to do a lot of drawing, it is precisely what I am good at, so this task is not very difficult for me. On the contrary, I enjoy it. Especially when designing alternative outfits, a lot of ingenuity has been put into each design. This is the most time-consuming part, but each design is truly beautiful to me! In fact, when exploring expressions, I found the most challenging aspect to be how to convey different emotions merely through the depiction of the eyes. So, I conducted a lot of research, observing the expressions and body language of the game characters in the game. Finally, when I selected the final pose for Kaya and colored it, I referred to the art style of TGC, imitating the official style, colors, brushstrokes of Sky. The final effect presented was very satisfactory to me.
